July 14th–20th and July 22nd-28th 2024

Greenland is a wilderness adventure like no other. The Greenland Ice Cap Trek takes a small team of adventurers to the edge of the northern ice cap on this epic six-day trek through the dramatic and rapidly changing arctic landscape.

We will hike through the tundra, passing glaciers, moraines, erratics and kettle holes - vast lakes hollowed out by glacial melt. In this utterly wild environment, far from civilisation, your training will pay off as your pack feels light, and you can fully immerse yourself in the Arctic ecosystem.

Greenland's summertime fauna paints the whole landscape with swathes of rich colour, and you will be able to spot herds of reindeer, silky arctic foxes and fearsome musk oxen weighing almost half a tonne.

As we explore deeper into the wilderness, your expedition skills come into play, and we will set up camp after three days near the Greenland ice cap. You will fall asleep listening to the incredible power of the ice cap as it splits and cracks, launching chunks of ice the size of houses onto the tundra below. This carving alone is an experience like no other and one that future generations may not have the privilege of enjoying.

Your training will allow you to enjoy being in a remote, delicate ecosystem on the front-line of climate change.

My Greenland experience with Turn Wild went well beyond expectations. I wasn’t prepared for the wonderful sensation of true remoteness. It was a great physical and mental challenge and I am left obsessing with what comes next. Ian did a great job of making sure we were ready for everything. I can’t recommend highly enough.

  • Do I need to be experienced in wild camping?

You'll need to gain wild camping experience before you go on this expedition. You can get this at our training event in Dartmoor. A prerequisite for the trip if you have yet to go wild camping with us.

How fit do I need to be?

The fitter you are, the more enjoyable and safer your trek. Please remember the Turn Wild mantra over the next few months: "Train hard, trek easy!". Greenland 2024 is an amber expedition rated challenging on the Expedition Traffic Light System. Suitable for novices as long as they have done the correct training and preparation.

A training goal you should aim for is being able to do one or many of the following:

Hike for 6 hours, regularly carrying a minimum of 15kg with an ascent of over 500m.

    Cycle 60 km regularly.

    Run regularly 10km.

We reserve the right to remove any team member at their expense who is at an unsafe fitness level. We have a Turn Wild Strava group to aid your training. We teach you all about what training to do in an expedition physical preparation seminar.

What is the polar bear risk? Will I have to do a polar bear watch?

Three years ago in May, there were a couple of sightings of the odd polar bear drifting down from the north on ice flows. No polar bears have been spotted in the area in July/ August. The government deems it safe and states no firearms or bear deterrents are needed.

Will we be able to go on the ice cap? Yes, you will. We will walk up to the Ice Cap where tours frequently stop to go on to it. You will then be able to step on at your own risk.

What if I get COVID before the trip?

We strongly suggest that you insure yourself against cancellation. Sadly, we can not refund or move your place.

    What is the weather like?

Average temperatures are 12C during the day and 3C at night during August. Think early spring in the UK. Overnight temperatures can drop below 0C, particularly by the ice cap, so a sleeping bag should be rated to at least -5C to ensure comfort.

  • The total cost is £1,950. All bookings start with a one on one call with one of our qualified guides. This call is to make sure all your questions are answered so that all team members know about the expedition challenges and the commitment that must be made in preparation. You may also ask any further questions you may have around the expedition. After this call, a deposit of 30% will be sent to you to secure your place. The balance is due 50 days before the start of the expedition. For cancellations made within 30-40 days of the trip commencement date, Turn Wild reserves the right to retain 50% of the balance payment. For cancellations within 30 days of the departure date, Turn Wild will retain 100% of the total fee. For any further questions or to secure a place, please contact us via the details below. Zagori

September 29th - October 4th

Immerse yourself in pristine landscapes, ancient stone bridges, and ancient forests. Hike through picturesque villages, savour local cuisine and discover hidden waterfalls. With stunning vistas at every turn, Zagori offers an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

September 29th - October 4th 2024
Greece

Enjoy a remote, inspiring trek in the breathtaking beauty of Zagori, Greece.

Zagori teems with diverse wildlife: brown bears, wild boar, wolves, and eagles. Sadly, all are shy and rarely spotted. However, you will still see many alpine flowers in this cooler, more hiking-friendly season.

Zagori's delectable cuisine features local cheeses, game meats, and traditional pies-all enjoyed in delightful village squares shaded by trees. Stay in warm, hospitable guest houses, blending rustic elegance with stunning views, ensuring a memorable Zagori experience.

Our itinerary is challenging but feasible. Highlights include the world's deepest to width Vikos Gorge, the stunning Dragons Lake, and incredible sunsets from Astra Refuge. Although a green level event with no wild camping and no need to carry heavy backpacks, this event should be considered amber in terms of physical challenge, as days are 6 hours of hiking per day with steep long descents and ascents.

Itinerary

DAY ONE: ARRIVE- PAPIGKO
Meet your team at Preveza Airport and transfer for three and a half hours to Papigko. Settle into your rustic accommodation, wander around the village, enjoy the views and then meet to enjoy traditional Greek food from the finest local produce.

DAY TWO: PAPIGKO TO ASTRAKA REFUGE
Start the day hiking for approximately an hour to the small village of Mikro Papigko, where we will stop for coffee. We will then ascend, stopping at sheltered watering stops at the Astraka Refuge. After lunch, those who wish to save their legs can enjoy the views while those still with a skip can hike to Dragons Lake, full of newts, before returning to the Astra Refuge for dinner and spectacular sunsets.

Distance to Astraka refugee: 6km / 1000m ascent/ Time 3.5-4 hours hiking. Extra distance to Dragon Lake: 5.5km / 450m ascent and descent.

DAY 3: ASTRAKA REFUGE TO TSEPELOVO
A challenging but spectacular day. Tremendous glacial landscape views descend into a stunning, breathtaking gorge. Using less frequented routes, we will enjoy a sense of isolation before descending past spectacular limescale features to the small mountain village of Tsepelovo.

Distance: 13km / 500m ascent/ 1350m descent/ approx. 6 hours.

DAY 4: TSEPELOVO TO MONODENDRI
Ascend a staired path looking down on scenic Tsepelvo until descending to Kapesovo. From here, you will drop into an ancient forest. You will then face your most challenging hiking as you enter the Vikos Gorge, hike around a small roped exposed section and take on the steep ascent into the most beautiful village of Monodendri.

Distance: 9km / 680m ascent/ 700m descent/ approx. 5 hours.

DAY 5: MONODENDRI TO PAPIGKO.
This is a big day to end. Descend into the stunning, vast Viko Gorge. Stop at the gorgeous blue springs to cool down before ascending to the most spectacular views of the trek. Some sections of this day are exposed. Limestone can be slippery if raining and some small areas are roped for safety.

Distance: 16km / 1300m ascent/ 1400m descent/ approx. 8.5 hours.

DAY 6: TRANSFER PAPIGKO TO PREVEZA AIRPORT- FLY HOME.

What Is included

  • Professional local guides

  • Tour operator from the UK

  • Transfers to and from Preveza Airport

  • Daily taxi transfer to next town to transport bags Breakfasts (not at the refuge)

  • Four nights shared in rustic 3-star accomodation One night at Mountain Hostel in a shared room

  • Logistics Zoom Seminar

  • Group shopping experience in London/ or personal Zoom call

  • Expedition preparation seminar- How not to get injured

What Is not included

  • Insurance

  • Alcoholic drinks

  • Breakfast at refuge

  • Snacks/ dinners

  • Additional incurred costs if you are unable to follow the set route

  • Extra guide costs if alternative routes are requested. Additional expenses incurred in an emergency/ illness

  • Your personal equipment

  • Do I need to be experienced in trekking/expeditions?

The fact that we are transporting your bag by taxi and you will mainly have a good night's sleep in hotels/ guest houses makes this trek very forgiving. However, hiking is challenging; some scree slopes and a few exposed places exist. We strongly recommend attending our Snowdonia training weekend if you are not experienced. You don't need to camp on this unless you wish, but this trek is very remote in places and should not be underestimated. In terms of physical preparation, think of this event as an amber. We can lower this rating on a couple of days in places using a local taxi (at your expense), but you should arrive planning to be trek fit.

    What equipment do I need?

We will send you a packing list and go through it on Zoom, but hiking boots, walking poles, a head torch, a sleeping liner for the refugee, a bag to carry your water, snacks, and waterproofs are essential. You will get good phone reception apart from in the most remote hiking parts.

How fit do I need to be?

You should be able to carry the weight you intend to be carry on your back (not what you intend to give the porters!) up the Watkins path on multiple days. Running 10km, hiking regularly for 6 hours with 1000m of ascent, cycling 3-4 hours at a steady pace will all prepare you. The training in Snowdonia in June will allow you to be assessed and still give you enough time to further prepare.

What will the weather be like?

The weather in October is perfect for hiking. 20-25°C and dropping to around 10°c at night. At the refugee, this can be zero degrees due to the altitude. Mountain weather is susceptible to quick changes, so please bring waterproofs and a warm layer.

  • The total cost is £899. Kyrgyzstan

3rd - 12th September

A trekker's paradise: high mountains, vast glaciers, and pristine blue glacial lakes provide rewarding, hard-earned views. We will trek in two different national parks - Ala Arachan and Tien Shan mountains. The "Mountains of Heaven" stretch across Central Asia and can't help but inspire with its towering peaks, rich flora, and fauna.

3rd – 12th September 2024

Kyrgyzstan is a proud country of high mountains and a culture forged on the nomadic way of life. It is pure and simply a trekker's paradise. High mountains, vast glaciers, and pristine blue glacial lakes provide rewarding, hard-earned views. We will trek in two different national parks - Ala Arachan and Tien Shan mountains. The "Mountains of Heaven" stretch across Central Asia and can't help but inspire with its towering peaks, rich flora, and fauna.

You may likely see Siberian Ibex, Himalayan Marmots, Himalayan Vultures, and Red Squirrels and enjoy knowing that snow leopards and wolves live in the park where we will tread.

Kyrgyz people are renowned for their warm welcome to visitors. Traditional customs include offering guests kumis {fermented mare's milk) and entertaining them with epic poetry and music, particularly the komuz {a traditional string instrument).

Yurts, portable felt dwellings, symbolise the nomadic heritage and are still used for celebrations and festivals. The cuisine features hearty dishes like manti {dumplings), beshbarmak {noodles with meat), and shashlik {kebabs). These reflect a reliance on horses, sheep, and goats. The Kyrgyz language, belonging to the Turkic family, is widely spoken, though Russian remains essential. Kyrgyzstan declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and monuments and buildings dominate the country.

Our itinerary is challenging but feasible. On booking, you can chat with our guide to see if we need to adapt the expedition for you, hire extra porters, etc. It is an achievable goal for a keen day hiker, with training. Join us, step up into the high mountains, and enjoy an incredible trekking experience.

You will speak to one of your guides before booking your place so you have a plan to be best prepared. This will allow you to have the most enjoyable experience in this challenging high mountain environment.

Do I have to use a porter?

No, you do not if you can prove to us that you are physically capable of safely and enjoyably carrying your own equipment and food allowance. The training in Snowdonia in June will allow you to be assessed and still give you enough time to prepare.

What will the weather be like?

In September, you will need sunblock during the day. Temperatures will sit around 15°C daily and drop to zero, possibly down to minus 5. Expect sun, freezing rain, sleet and maybe even a little snow at the higher altitudes.

April 22nd – 28th 2024

Scotland in the spring. The new year of nature starts to burst forth. UK summer expedition season has begun! In this time of renewal, the dreaded midges have not yet reached plague level, and the weather can be kind and cruel.

Join us on an expedition through some of Scotland's most remote and breathtaking valleys. Our journey will begin in the most inaccessible mainland town in Britain, leading us through stunning landscapes and around breathtaking lochs. Along the way, we will make a stop at the iconic Glenfinnan viaduct, known for its appearance in the Harry Potter films. We will then continue on to the tranquil and picturesque area of Ardgour, where we will catch a quick ferry to Fort William.

To make the journey even more spectacular, we highly recommend taking the Caledonian Sleeper, though please note that transfers are not included in the expedition. From Fort William, we will travel by train to Mallaig, which is often considered one of the most stunning train journeys in the world. The journey includes crossing over the magnificent Glenfinnan viaduct. We then catch a ferry to lnverie.

This expedition is not a beginner's event. You must have experience of wild camping with Turn Wild. Please feel free to commit to this if you want a challenging goal and have the appropriate drive and time to devote. To take your next step, please arrange a chat with your professional and friendly guide.

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.
— Sir Edmund Hillary

DAY FIVE: MONDAY 22TND APRIL: THROUGH ARDGOUR INTO FORT WILLIAM

  • Alcoholic drinks.

  • Snacks.

  • Meals at pub lunches.

  • Friday dinner.

  • Insurance.

  • Any costs additional costs due to bad weather/ emergency.

  • I am a total beginner. I am trying to figure out what to bring or how to pack my rucksack. Is this expedition still suitable for me?

Yes, but only if you do our pre-expedition training. Sadly, it is not safe if you do not. Gain the necessary skills and knowledge by attending either our Summer Arctic Training weekend or our Wild Camping Training in Dartmoor in March, May or June. To qualify for this trip, you must have done wild camping with Turn Wild. This very tough expedition becomes even more challenging with bad weather. Please don't worry, our training weekend with our Zoom seminars on expedition equipment, our personal shopping experience, and seminar on expedition teamwork and expedition nutrition will have you proficient and bursting with confidence.

How fit do I need to be?

The fitter you are, the more resilient you will be and the more you will enjoy it. You need to be able to carry a rucksack with all your equipment and food in it for up to 12 hours total per day, ascending 800m on steep terrain. A fitness goal is to run 15km, cycle 100km, or regularly hike 6 hours in mountainous terrain carrying 15kg. Please don't worry. We will give you a whole Zoom seminar on expedition preparation!

What will the weather be like?

This expedition is not for the faint-hearted. The weather could be anything! Last year it was very sunny! Hopefully, it will be nice. However, this is Scotland, the land of the brave, and you must be prepared for anything. Good news: the dreaded Scottish midge is not too bad at this time of year. You will have to pack for conditions to drop below freezing at night. This means heavier equipment than a warmer weather expedition.

Do I have to travel there and back by sleeper train?

No, you can fly into an airport, but you will have a long taxi ride. 2 hours to either Glasgow or Inverness. We will form a WhatsApp group with other team members who may wish to travel this way. Expedition & wild camping training

Dartmoor & Snowdon
Multiple Dates

Our expedition and wild camping training weekends provide an excellent opportunity to develop your outdoor skills from a day hiker to a wild camper or expedition team member.

Dartmoor and Snowdon

Dartmoor
Friday March 22nd (evening) - Sunday 24th (lunch)
Friday May 17th Evening - Sunday 19th (lunch)
Friday June 7th (evening) - Sunday 9th (lunch)

Snowdonia
Friday June 21st (lunch) - Sunday 23rd (lunch)

Our expedition and wild camping training weekends provide an excellent opportunity to develop your outdoor skills from a day hiker to a wild camper or expedition team member. During the training, participants can learn the camp craft, essential techniques for river crossing, how to cook, set-up tents, call for help in a remote location and, very importantly, protect the fragile remote environments they are visiting. Our goal is not simply to give you a wild camping experience but to train you to become an environmentally conscious wild camper and resilient expedition team member.

Our live interactive Zoom training (pre-weekend) will help to get you ready for the expedition and wild camping training. The lectures cover expedition preparation, nutrition and equipment. We also send a professional guide to meet your weekend group to help you buy the right clothes and equipment. If you are trying this for the first time, we can provide you with a rucksack and sleeping bag at a small extra cost.

This training experience fosters self-reliance and prepares individuals for adventurous expeditions and wild camping excursions. It is rated GREEN on our traffic light system of rating events. You must be able to hike for 4 hours carrying 15 kilos on uneven ground. Training also includes a Greenland Expedition module covering musk ox behaviour and equipment you need in an Arctic summer environment, the Snowdonia June training and trekking (altitude, physical preparation) and the Kyrgyzstan module (altitude, physical preparation, what to take). This will be more strenuous but with no wild camping.

To meet learn more please click here.

  • I am a total beginner. I'd like to know what personal equipment to bring or how to pack my rucksack. Is this course still suitable for me?

Yes, this course is perfect. It will transform you from a day hiker to someone proficient in wild camping or good enough to join an expedition team! The basics are covered step by step with a professional guide. You will be able to learn essential equipment choices in Zoom meetings with a Turn Wild expedition leader. You will be sent a clear packing list and have time to meet a Turn Wild guide in London and get expedition shopping advice. So you can embark on your weekend full of confidence and the right mindset to learn.

Do I have to spend a lot of money on equipment?

No, for the weekend, you will only need hiking basics. We will supply the big cost items like tents and cookers. You can hire a sleeping bag, backpack, dry bag, and liner from us for £80 for the weekend (size and stock depending) or borrow one for even cheaper from a friend!

I am an experienced wild camper. Would this course be good for me?

Yes. It will allow you to up skill and take on adventures in places like Scotland, Kyrgyzstan, Zagori (Greece) and Greenland. You will cover various river crossing techniques, packing tips, expedition nutrition, Greenland advice (only in June) and have access to experienced guides.

How fit do I need to be?

You need to be able to carry a rucksack with all your equipment and food in it for four hours per day. A fitness goal would be to be able to run 5km or walk 4 hours carrying a 15kg backpack. The emphasis is on learning skills, not covering distance.

What happens if I cannot make one of the Zoom training sessions?

We understand we all live busy lives. A recording of the Zoom session will be made if you cannot make it. You can then watch it whenever you get a chance. If you have any questions after this, you will, of course, be able to email or talk to one of our professional guides.

Why is the emphasis on Greenland on the June course?

The June course will cover musk ox behaviour, polar bear risk and equipment choices for our Greenland expedition. Skills applicable to most summer arctic conditions. However, if you plan on entering the sub-zero arctic environment, we strongly recommend that you take your training further than supplied on this course. The course does not cover glacier crossings or sub-zero temperature camp craft, nor do we use firearms or pyrotechnics.

Will I be a competent navigator at the end of this course?

No, it is not a realistic goal with all our other learning outcomes. Please take a look at our navigation courses to become proficient at this. We are happy to give you some navigation tips on the weekend, though.

  • The total cost is £250 per person. All bookings start with a one on one call with one of our qualified guides. This call is to make sure all your questions are answered so that all team members know about the expedition challenges and the commitment that must be made in preparation. Toubkal Ascent

April 1st – 6th 2024

Embark on an exhilarating winter expedition to the majestic Mount Toubkal, the crowning jewel of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains!

4167m
April 1st–6th 2024

Embark on an exhilarating winter expedition to the majestic Mount Toubkal, the crowning jewel of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains! Standing proudly at 4,167 meters (13,671 ft), the highest peak in North Africa,

Experience waking up in a mountain refuge, sipping steaming mint tea while the dawn light gently unveils the snowy peaks. Each day is a new adventure - trekking through serene valleys, navigating icy paths, and bonding with fellow explorers over shared stories and local food. The challenge of reaching the summit is met with unparalleled views that stretch across the Atlas range and the Sahara Desert. It's like standing on the roof of North Africa, with the world laid out before you. You will have the right to tell people back home – “This winter- I Just climbed the highest peak in North Africa!”

But Mount Toubkal isn't just about the ascent; it's also about the culture. You'll wander through Berber villages, meeting warm locals and experiencing a way of life that's remained largely unchanged for centuries. Each step is a step back in time, a journey through a land rich in history and tradition.

Winter expeditions are an exhilarating but physically demanding experience. The cold, the wind, and the extra weight of your crampons and axe make your spectacular snow-covered views a little harder to earn. You do not need winter skills for this trek, but you do need to have the physical conditioning and regularly be doing strenuous hiking.

This will truly be an expedition to remember.
